Teek Theme — Free WordPress Block Theme for Design Studios

Teek Theme

A block theme for design studios and consultancies. Teek behaves like a mount board: it holds a precise, quiet frame so the work inside supplies the color. Free, GPL, and complete.

  • Full site editing with a complete set of block templates
  • Two style variations and full-page starter patterns
  • Fonts bundled locally — nothing loaded from a third party
  • GPL v2 or later, free for commercial use

Structure instead of decoration

Most agency themes reach for rows of identical cards. Teek gets its structure from typography — an asymmetric measure, a strict baseline, and images that break out to the full width.

The asymmetric measure

Running text sits off-center on wide screens, leaving an open rail for dates and categories, while images and section bands run the full width of the page. Posts and archives are listed as a typographic index rather than a grid.

Two typefaces, doing the work

A grotesque for display and a serif for reading, set on a 68-character measure. Both are bundled as local woff2 files under the SIL Open Font License.

Colors, typography and spacing live in the theme’s theme.json, so they are editable in the site editor without touching code.

The whole page, end to end

Teek’s home page exactly as it ships — the hero, the wide photograph, selected work, services as definition rows, a three-column index of recent writing, and the contact close. Every one of those is a bundled pattern, so a new site is assembled in the editor rather than coded.

What ships with it

A full set of templates

Home, blog index, single post, page, wide page, archive, search and 404 — eight block templates plus header and footer template parts, all editable in the site editor.

Starter patterns

Full-page patterns for a Home, Services and Studio page, offered when you create a new page, plus section patterns for a hero, a work index, a services layout and a contact close.

Two style variations

Night inverts the mount for photographic work. Studio swaps the two typefaces so headlines set in the serif and running text in the grotesque.

Built to be accessible

Visible focus on every control, a skip link, underlined links in running text so color is never the only signal, and reduced-motion support.

Nothing heavy

No JavaScript framework, no bundled plugin, no external requests at runtime. Fonts and images are local, and the images are WebP.

GPL v2 or later

The theme, its images and its screenshot are GPL. The two font families carry their own SIL Open Font License, with the full text included in the download.

Requirements and download

Download the zip, then in WordPress go to Appearance → Themes → Add New → Upload Theme, choose the file and activate.

WordPress 6.6+

Teek is a block theme and needs the site editor, so it will not run on a WordPress release old enough to lack it.

PHP 7.4+

Tested up to WordPress 7.1. No server extension beyond a standard WordPress install is required.

Version 1.2.1

Released 11 September 2026. The full changelog is inside the download, in readme.txt.

Teek FAQs

What does Teek cost?

Nothing. It is licensed under the GNU General Public License v2 or later and free to use on any number of sites, commercial or otherwise.

Which WordPress version does Teek need?

WordPress 6.6 or later and PHP 7.4 or later. Teek is a block theme and uses full site editing, so it will not work on a WordPress old enough to lack the site editor.

Do I need a page builder plugin?

No. Teek is a block theme, so every template and every page is edited in WordPress’ own site editor. There is nothing to install alongside it.

Can I use Teek for a client site?

Yes. The GPL places no restriction on commercial use, and there is no per-site license to buy or track.

Can I change the colors and fonts?

Yes. Colors, typography and spacing are defined in the theme’s theme.json and are editable in Appearance → Editor → Styles without touching any code. Two style variations ship with the theme.

What are the two style variations?

Night inverts the mount for studios whose work is photographic, and Studio swaps the two typefaces so headlines set in the serif and running text in the grotesque.

Are the fonts included or loaded from Google?

Included. Familjen Grotesk and Newsreader are bundled as local woff2 files under the SIL Open Font License, so no font request leaves the visitor’s browser.

How do I install it?

Download the zip, then in WordPress go to Appearance → Themes → Add New → Upload Theme, choose the file and activate.

Want the site built around it?

Teek is free either way. If you would rather we designed, built, hosted and maintained the site, tell us what you need.
